CSAT measures how satisfied customers are with a product, service, or interaction. One business might use a 1–5 scale, another might use 1–7, and another might use a statement scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree. That means a “good CES score” always depends on the format you use.
That said, there’s still a practical rule of thumb. A strong target to aim for is to be in the top 10–20% of your chosen scale. On a 1–5 scale, that means aiming for an aggregate score of at least 4, but up to 4.5.
The more important benchmark, though, is your own trend line. If your CES score improves quarter after quarter, your customer service solutions are probably removing friction. If it falls, something in the customer journey is getting harder. That could point to weak self-service options, slower first-response times, more handoffs between customer support agents, or processes that force customers to repeat information.
In other words, a good customer effort score is not just a number. It’s evidence that the experience is becoming easier.
The simplest way to measure customer effort score is to calculate the average of all responses. Add up every survey response, then divide that total by the number of respondents. IBM describes the customer effort score calculation in exactly those terms: the total sum of responses divided by the number of responses.
Here is a straightforward customer effort score example using a 1–5 scale where 1 = very difficult and 5 = very easy:
A 4.2 average suggests a low effort experience. Most customers found the interaction easy, even if a small number ran into friction. If the same touchpoint scored 3.1 the following month, that would be a sign to investigate what changed.

Once the math is clear, the next challenge is collecting reliable survey responses. That is where survey design matters.
A customer effort score survey works best when it is short, specific, and triggered at the right moment. The goal is not to run a long research project. It’s to capture how much effort a customer had to expend during a clearly defined interaction, then use that feedback to generate actionable insights.
Send the CES survey immediately after the relevant interaction. That could be after a support case closes, after a purchase is completed, after onboarding reaches a milestone, or after a subscription sign-up. The closer the survey is to the experience, the more accurate the response is likely to be.
Automated triggers can have a positive impact here. If your customer support team has to remember to send surveys manually, response rates and consistency usually suffer.

Right after the case closes, the customer receives this customer effort score survey:

Now imagine that over one week, 10 customers respond to the same billing survey with these scores:

It suggests customers are encountering friction in the billing resolution process. If you review the open-ended comments and see repeated mentions of long waits, multiple agent touches, and having to repeat account details, you have a clear operational diagnosis.
Now compare that with a low effort experience. A customer visits your help center, finds a clear article, follows a guided flow, fixes the issue in two minutes, and then answers the same survey with a 5. If most respondents score that interaction as 4 or 5, your CES data will show that the self-service journey is doing its job.
This contrast is where CES becomes useful. It doesn’t just tell you that one experience felt better than another; it shows which process creates high customer effort, which process creates a low effort experience, and where your support team should focus first.
