Rating

Published
June 27, 2025

This question type allows users to collect ratings from respondents based on their experience as feedback. Unlike the Rating Scale, this question type lets users choose from defined range of visuals that respondents fill to the appropriate level to show their level of liking.

Example

Imagine you’re a hotel owner and you simply want to know if a guest had a good time at your hotel and how they appreciated the facilities in one survey. Additionally, you would like to use this to add it into your reviews that are already on your website. You can simply make a survey full of star rating of your various facilities and then average the result into a singular star rating.

Answer Choices

This section allows the users to define the scale of rating for their respondents.

Text

Add the text-based levels to your rating scales here. Since the users have to pick from a pre-listed range of visuals to display the rating on the scale, this question type does not allow the user to add images or emojis to the scale levels.

Alias

Aliases are the alternate texts or codes that you can display on your reports/exports. These values are not visible to the respondent and are helpful when you want to associate a particular value with your provided option.

Points

You can simply assign points to every option of the question and Checkbox will automatically calculate the scores of each question (based on the answer picked by the respondent) and ultimately of your complete survey. See more on How to Create a Scored Survey.

Behavior

This section allows the users to pick the visuals for the rating scale. Checkbox offers following range of options to pick from:

  • Star
  • Horizontal Bar
  • Vertical Bar
  • Line
  • Box
  • Pill
  • Reversed Box

Each of these options provides a visual scale for respondents to indicate their preferences. Additionally, users can adjust the size when selecting the Star scale option and configure whether to display text or scale levels next to each option while setting up the scale. Like other question types, users can make the question mandatory or soft required, set a question alias, and assign a CSS class to it.

Appearance

This section of your question allows you to administer how your questions and your options would appear on your survey page.

Question Text Position

Lets you decide the position of your question with respect to the options. By default, it is set to “Top”. This means that the question will be placed above the answer options

Question Position

Lets you decide the alignment of the question (left, middle, right) with respect to the survey page. By default, it is set to “Left. This means that your question will be left indented.

Conditions

This section of the question allows you to manage the conditional appearance of the question based on either a previous response, a contact attribute or a response property. You can combine 2 or more conditions using “OR/ AND” conditions by clicking on them. Please refer to our “Quick Start: Add a Condition to a Question”.

Report

Data collection is done, now its time to look at the actual data and responses. This graph below will be the one you will see when you navigate to the Report page and select view.

Would you like a different graph or different colors ? Thats an easy fix, you can edit this graph however you want and completely to your needs.
