Single Line Text

Published
June 27, 2025

The single-line question type is an ideal way to obtain a short answer from the respondent. Whenever you need input from the respondent, whether it's a short comment developing on their previous answer to a question or inputting their information, you should opt for this question. It offers flexible customization options and allows to set character limits to control the answer length and select a desired answer format (such as text or numeric) to validate responses for accuracy.

An extremely useful feature of this question is enabling Sentiment Analysis to gauge the tone of respondents' answers, helping you quickly assess the emotional context of their feedback. This question type is ideal for gathering concise, structured input with added insights into respondent sentiment.

Example

You are running a customer satisfaction survey with clients and you want to close up the survey? Single Line type is your friend. You can prompt them for additional comments and based on them ask for their email address like in the example below to have contact information to follow up with them regarding their thoughts.

Behaviour

This section allows you to set different validations for your questions in addition to setting up an alias for your question and deciding whether or not you want to allow the respondent to add an option against the question on their own.

Make Question Required

Checkmark this box if you want the question to be answered as compulsory. The user can not go forward from the current page unless the question is answered.

Make Question Soft Required

Encourages the respondent to respond to the question. The user encounters the message “An answer is recommended, but not required.” if the question is left unanswered in one attempt. Respondents can ignore the message and click “Next” again to go to the next page of the survey.

Question Alias

Aliases are the alternate texts or codes that you can display on your reports/exports. These values are not visible to the respondent and are helpful when you want to associate a particular value with your provided question.

Answer Format

Add your validation rules to the field based on the type of question. Checkbox provides a list of options to select your validation rule from, including Regular Expression (RegEx). When enabled, the formatting will restrict respondents to only enter characters allowed by the specified rule.

Max Length

You can restrict the respondent to a character limit that you define in this section.

Default Text

This field allows you to fill the answer box with default text. You can also use the “@” symbol to merge data from profile properties or from answers to previous questions provided by the respondent.

Enable Sentiment Analysis

This feature detects the emotional tone of responses, identifying them as positive, negative, or neutral based on the words they use to answer this question. This helps you quickly gauge customer satisfaction or pinpoint areas needing attention, adding valuable insights into open-ended feedback.

Autocomplete

This option lets you choose a list (like countries or US states) or create your own for respondents to pick from, helping them autofill the answer field. As they type, matching options will appear to assist them in completing their response quickly.

Appearance

This section of your question allows you to administer how your questions and your options would appear on your survey page.

Question Text Position

Lets you decide the position of your question with respect to the options. By default, it is set to “Top”. This means that the question will be placed above the answer options

Question position

Lets you decide the alignment of the question (left, middle, right) with respect to the survey page. By default, it is set to “Left. This means that your question will be left indented.

Width

This field allows you to set the width of the answer field that will be visible to the user. By default, it is set to 40px

Conditions

This section of the question allows you to manage the conditional appearance of the question based on either a previous response, a contact attribute or a response property. You can combine 2 or more conditions using “OR/ AND” conditions by clicking on them. Please refer to our “Quick Start: Add a Condition to a Question”.
